Since the contest started, I have received calls, text messages and emails from parents and teachers telling me how the Essay Contest for Children of African Descent has motived their children to excel in terms of personal growth, at home, at their mainstream school and how they have blossomed. Here are a few highlights of our children’s successes over the years. 2013 Left is a photo of four Ugandan students whose works were featured on grain.org with their fabulous teacher Mr Isevahani who has supported this contest for many years. 2012 Feedback received from Mr Isevahani in French. English translation Our winners of the last Essay competition thank you very much. In agreement with their parents, the prize they have won will help pay school fees of third term this year. Okwir Benson Moses will have his costs covered in full, Solomon 3/4 of his fees and Paul has already used his money to supplement the cost of the 2nd term because he still had a debt to pay for school. This has motivated many students; they have pledged to participate in huge number in the forthcoming competition. 2011 In addition to the world-wide contest held in 2011, we also held a one-day contest in London at the Karibu Education centre for UK children. (See at the end.) 2010 15 April 2010 Buruk's story in U.S. newspaper.docx 22 April 2010 The following was received from the mother of an essayist who participated in the Essay Contest in 2009 and 2010. “I can totally echo the e-mail of the teacher as I have observed exactly what it has done for my son who is so motivated and inspired by this contest.” February 2010 Received from a participating school in Ghana about how the small funds received from the first sale of a garment from this website (‘Shop..’) “I have bought some books, pens and mathematical sets for some of the kids and will pay for the examination fee for three kids. Some kids walk long distance to school. Could you believe some kids walk for like two hours before getting to school. I think a bicycle would help solve the problem. We intend to save the profit we get from our next order provided we get more, so we can at least buy a bicycle for a brilliant but needy child. “ 2009 13 March 2009 Forum for Women of the Caribbean - celebrating International Women’s Day Sonia Nyathi and Jabril Muhammad 2009 winners (14-16 years and 11-13 years categories respectively) read their essays at this event to a very appreciative audience. October 2009 In October 2009, I visited a school in Uganda that submitted over 100 essays. The children were very appreciative of the opportunity to participate in this contest and more so for the support offered from the Judges. 2009 October 2009 An unsolicited message from two essayists’ mum: “Just to say thank you for the educational support that you have given to my daughters. Sonia has participated in this competition for the past 3 years and I have seen her grow to this confident writer who can confidently put her views on paper. She has learnt so many essays writing skills that she is transferring these to school and other events, she just participated in a public speaking event and was extremely good, I was proud of her. I should express that you have contributed in giving these children confidence. Your judges always give them comments that they utilise to always improve. My youngest daughter Nandi could not wait to qualify of age to also participate in this essay writing experience. She participated last year and she would like to continue. Honestly all children that participated in this experience are all winners. Thank you for loving all these children like your own, they are.“ Sibo Sessay (Nandi and Sonia’s mum) 2008 WebTV Kenyetta Nimara was interviewed on and read her essay on WebTV.
